Students and staff at Mobile County Training School celebrated their community’s history with a special “mural reveal." The mural, which pays tribute to Africatown, was created by artist and MCPSS graduate Enrique Lopez to enhance the refurbished MCTS library. It’s an effort to spark students’ interest in learning about Africatown, according to Principal James Patterson. TaShayla Robinson, the school’s media specialist, spearheaded the mural project, with input from Mr. Patterson. The school is thankful to Cleon and Angela Jones, MCTS alumni, and to Dr. Reginald Crenshaw, District 3 Representative on the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners, for sponsoring this project.

The MCPSS Safety and Security Department is implementing MCPSS Speak Up!, an anonymous reporting platform where students, teachers, and staff may submit their concerns about mental health issues, threats, and related safety issues.
MCPSS Speak Up! is an app that will be available on the Chromebooks issued to our students. The app may also be downloaded on a smartphone. 
“We know that students are more likely to report threats or other emergencies if they’re able to do so anonymously. MCPSS Speak Up gives them an easy way to do that,” said Andy Gatewood, MCPSS Director of Safety and Security. “It’s so much more effective to alert your school’s safety team, who can do something about a threat, instead of sharing it over social media. MCPSS Speak Up is another tool that will help keep our schools the safest places to be between 8 and 3.”

Fifteen seniors from Alma Bryant High were recently selected for the Ingalls Shipbuilding Academy. During this year-long pre-apprenticeship program, these students will train in 16 different crafts, including welding, sheet metal, pipefitting, and more, while discovering the many career opportunities available with Ingalls Shipbuilding. They’ll also earn college credit through Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College along the way.

Twenty-nine MCPSS Class of 2026 graduates recently completed Bishop State Community College’s eight-week “All Hands on Deck” Bootcamp, which offered hands-on training in maritime pipefitting, welding, PPE, 3D metal printing and more. After graduating from the program, they then walked straight into a room filled with industry partners ready to hire.

MCPSS summer internships offered students an opportunity to gain hands-on workplace experience and skills. Two of the many industry partners who made these opportunities possible were steel manufacturer SSAB, which had interns from Alma Bryant, Citronelle and Williamson high schools this summer, and stainless steel manufacturer Outokumpu, which had interns from Citronelle and Vigor. Thank you to all our industry and community partners for helping our Career & Technical Education programs prepare our students for the workforce.

Mobile County Public Schools has been recognized nationally for making impressive progress in reducing chronic absenteeism. Attendance Works highlighted MCPSS as a success story for the district’s reduction in chronic absenteeism to 12.8 percent.
MCPSS Assistant Superintendent Terrence Mixon and Lead Social Worker and Mental Health Services Coordinator Denise Riemer shared information about how this work is being done during an Attendance Awareness Campaign webinar. They described efforts to improve attendance through a holistic approach that includes attendance teams at each school; collaboration with multiple partner agencies to create stronger relationships and a sense of belonging; and resources and support for parents and families. The district also provides mental health supports, including school-based services, and school staff are trained in youth mental health first aid so they can recognize students who are experiencing challenges that might impact their school attendance. Davidson's High's senior class boasts two ACT top scorers! Tyler Macon and Brayden Sadler each earned a perfect 36 on the ACT. This remarkable achievement places them among less than 0.22% of ACT test takers nationwide. Tyler (Ieft) is a member of Varsity Scholars Bowl, serves as Co-Captain of HiQ, and has represented Davidson through National History Day and Davidson’s Invitational Model UN, where he earned honors including Best Delegation and Best Resolution.
Brayden is a National Honor Society member, a 2025 Capstone Leadership Academy participant, and an active leader in Youth Leadership Mobile and the Mobile County Youth Drug Education Council. He also participates in Davidson’s Invitational Model UN.

Congtratulations to our new Golden Apple winners! WKRG recently recognized three MCPSS teachers with Golden Apple Awards: Jacyln Brown of Hankins Middle; Mary Lou Hatcher-Davis of Baker High; and Jakarah Munnerlyn of John Will Elementary.

Barbara Smith, MSN, RN, one of Mobile County Public Schools' Lead Nurses, has been named the 2026 School Nurse Administrator of the Year for the Alabama Association of School Nurses (AASN). 

Congratulations to LeFlore Magnet Career Coach John Davis and Dodge Elementary teacher Kathleen Woodard, who were honored with the Outstanding Educator Award from the Mobile Area Council of Scouting America. Also known as the Fretwell Award, this special recognition honors educators and community leaders who demonstrate and instill the values of Scouting through their service to others.

Davidson High School's Jaylen Robinson was one of five MCPSS Class of 2026 graduates honored in Mobile Bay Magazine's "Wonder Kids" feature. He's a track and field star who has been among the state’s best hurdlers. He won 18 events since 2022 and placed second or third in 21 others, placing second in the AHSAA 7A State Indoor Meet in the 60-meter hurdles. He’s now majoring in business at Alabama State University.

The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners will have a work session at noon on September 16 and a regular meeting at 10 a.m. on September 21.

The Board will also hold public hearings on the proposed 2026-2027 salary schedule and budget on September 8 at 3 p.m. and September 16 at 11:15 a.m.

The mcpssTV crew opened the 2026 football season with a doubleheader: Williamson at Baker on August 21 and Vigor vs. Blount at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on August 22. We have new faces on the broadcast: Taylor Tanner and Willie Gaston are providing commentary in the announcement booth, working with sideline reporter Kimberly Dunn.
Starting on September 1, the crew will also broadcast volleyball games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.
