New JROTC Brigade Commanders

Five cadets from four high schools were promoted and selected to lead their fellow cadets throughout the county this year as part of the MCPSS JROTC Brigade Command. They are:
Cadet Brigade Commander – C/LTC Alex Arnold, Murphy
Cadet Command Sergeant Major – C/CSM Chrislin Seals, Murphy
Cadet Deputy Brigade Commander – C/LTC Hannah Godwin, Theodore
Cadet Brigade Operations Officer – C/LTC Caylee Peyregne, Citronelle
Cadet Brigade Logistics Officer – C/LTC Ashton Johnson, Baker
These cadets will be tasked with organizing JROTC activities and competitions throughout the school year. As Cadet Brigade Commander, Arnold said she also plans to establish a mentorship program to make for a smoother transition for new cadets. Congratulations to all of these JROTC leaders!

National Merit Semifinalists

MCPSS is proud to announce five National Merit Semifinalists! Four Davidson High students and one Baker High student are among just over 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. These students earned this distinction by being among the highest-scoring students in Alabama on the Pre-SAT / National Merit Qualifying Test. Shown from left, they are:

Honors and Awards

The Alabama Association of School Boards recognized the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners with the School Board Member Academy Team Training Achievement Award, for demonstrating a commitment to excellence in education through boardsmanship training. We appreciate your dedication to our students!

Congratulations to four MCPSS administrators who were honored by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals for their exemplary leadership. Kerensa Williams of B.C. Rain was named Principal of the Year and Derrick Gray of LeFlore was named Assistant Principal of the Year for Region 1 High Schools. Nedra Payton of Calloway-Smith was named Principal of the Year and Kerryn Hollins of Chastang-Fournier K-8 was named Assistant Principal of the Year for Region 1 Middle Schools. 

Congratulations to Jenna Williams, a third-grade teacher at O’Rourke Elementary, who was awarded a $1,000 classroom supplies grant from the 68 Ventures Bowl! Representatives surprised her at school, and brought T-shirts, doughnuts, and other treats for her students.

The University of South Alabama brought its pep band, cheerleaders, dance team, football players and mascots to Fonde Elementary to present Principal Joy Gould with a $1,000 grant through the College Football Playoff Foundation's Extra Yard for Teachers Initiative. Also, teacher Leanna Chasteen was awarded $100 for classroom supplies.

News from the Athletic Division

Three MCPSS student athletes recently received special recognition. WKRG visited Theodore High School to honor Duke Beckham as the Zaxby's Fifth Quarter Player of the Week. Beckham (2) scored three touchdowns in the Bobcats' win over Elberta. The previous week, Murphy High School's Khamari Davis was selected as the Bryant Bank Player of the Week after Murphy's 33-6 win over Elberta. And Williamson’s Captain Munnerlyn was voted as the al.com Coastal Alabama Player of the Week after a standout night on defense in Williamson’s 56-0 win over B.C. Rain. 

Congratulations to the Middle School Volleyball Champions! Alba defeated Barton Academy in the Small Division, and Lott Middle defeated Phillips Preparatory School in the Large Division. Watch both games on the MCPSS YouTube channel.

 

Board Meetings

The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners will have a work session at noon on October 21 and a regular meeting at 10 a.m. on October 26.

School Calendar

The Mobile County Public Schools app includes the current district-wide school calendar, which is also available on  mcpss.com. Those who download the app may easily access the calendar and add important dates to their own calendars.

Sports Broadcasts

The mcpssTV crew has a busy lineup of football and volleyball broadcasts on tap! Watch the games on Comcast 15, Mediacom 85, AT&T U-verse 99, Roku boxes, Facebook or the mcpssTV YouTube channel.
Volleyball: The final volleyball broadcast will be October 7 at 5:30 p.m., featuring St. Luke's vs. Davidson.
Football: We have new faces on the MCPSS Football Game of the Week broadcast: Taylor Tanner, Matt Moore and Willie Gaston are providing commentary in the announcement booth, working with sideline reporter Kimberly Dunn.
The next football Games of the Week are:

  • October 2: MGM vs. Baker
  • October 9: Spanish Fort vs. Theodore
  • October 15: Vigor vs. Williamson

Nominate a Teacher
