Five high schools honored for highest participation rates in scholarship program

Five Mobile County high schools were recognized for having the highest participation in the Alabama Direct Admission Initiative, through which the MCPSS Class of 2026 has earned a record $1.2 billion in college scholarships. The schools are:

Vigor High (small schools category): 1,910 scholarships worth $52.3 million
LeFlore Magnet (medium schools category): 2,039 scholarships worth $53.4 million
B.C. Rain (medium schools category): 1,722 scholarships worth $46.5 million
Davidson (large schools category): 4,233 scholarships worth $120.8 million
Mary G. Montgomery (extra large schools category): 6,608 scholarships worth $224.1 million

The program is through Alabama Possible, which facilitates the college application process with the goal of making post-secondary education more easily accessible. Students were invited to apply to multiple in-state and out-of-state colleges and were matched with admissions offers and scholarships. MCPSS students earned the highest amount of college scholarships in Alabama through this program. Scholarship offers continue to roll in, and we look forward to announcing the final totals later this summer.

130 attend JROTC Leadership Academy

More than 130 campers tackled a wide variety of mental and physical challenges during the 11th annual JROTC STEM Leadership Academy at Spring Hill College. The students went on industry site visits to learn about career opportunities throughout the region, and competed in a robotics competition, working in teams to build a clawbot. They also learned the typical skills of a power line repair technician, thanks to a partnership with Alabama Power and Bishop State Community College.

Denton student's documentary is a History Day highlight

Congratulations to Cassie Williams, a rising eighth-grader at Denton Magnet School of Technology, whose documentary about the Clotilda was included in a special showcase during the National History Day celebration this week in Washington, D.C.

As a member of Denton's History Club, Cassie conducted research and interviews to create an award-winning presentation, “Voyage of the Clotilda - Ocean of Tears.” The documentary won first place during the South Alabama Regional History Day competition and second place at the state competition.

“Voyage of the Clotilda” was selected to the Documentary Showcase at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The documentary was on view to thousands of visitors during the National History Day celebration. Cassie’s project is one of 22 student documentaries in the showcase, and one of 109 student showcases from across the nation.

Students from Causey, Clark-Shaw, Denton and Lott Middle Schools and Blount, Citronelle, Davidson, Mary G. Montgomery and Murphy High Schools finished in the top two of their respective categories and won 28 awards in the Alabama State History Day Competition, which qualified them to compete in the National History Day Competition.
